    Tumor Microenvironment Impacts Cancer Subtype Progression

    Scientists at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) report that two different mouse models of breast cancer progressed differently based on characteristics of the tumor microenvironment, which is the area of tissue in which the tumor is embedded. The team published its study (“Presence of Insulin-Like Growth Factor Binding Proteins Correlates With Tumor-Promoting Effects of Matrix Metalloproteinase 9 in Breast Cancer”) in Neoplasia.

    Brain Protein Linked to Binge Drinking

    Researchers at The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) have discovered that a brain protein has a key role in controlling binge drinking in animal models. They found that deleting the gene for this protein in mice ramped up alcohol consumption and prevented the brain from signaling the rewarding properties of alcohol.

    Takeda, Sanford-Burnham Launch Heart Failure Collaboration

    Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute at Lake Nona said it is launching a two-year partnership with Takeda Pharmaceutical focused on treating heart failure. The value of the collaboration was not disclosed.
